Travelling In The Words of a Six Year Old

Lucy never stops trying to keep up with Peter and Susan.  She admits she’s not a “big kid”, but rejects the idea of a “little kid”…she settles for referring to herself as a “medium kid”.  So, knowing that Peter and Susan have both done a blog post on their thoughts about travelling, she’s asked to do one, too.

This is Lucy’s take on what it’s like to travel with her family:

I like travelling with my family.  It’s fun.  I like seeing the animals best.  My favourites are the kangaroos and baby kangaroos in the pouches, the emu daddies and chicks, and the ducks.

I like playing with my brothers and sister.  They give me lots of cuddles and kisses.

My mummy makes bread for us.  I like eating the bread she makes.

And that’s it.

Lucy loves riding her bike.  She has to peddle furiously, though, to keep up with Peter and Susan.

As long as it’s good weather, I’ll often take Edmund and Lucy outside in the morning to stop them waking up everyone else.  They can’t keep quiet to save themselves, and wake early…whereas Peter and Susan are sleepy heads.

It’s actually not cloud in this photo…it was mist and fog in the early morning over the Flinders Ranges.  As the morning went on, the fog and mist lifted and it was a really warm day.  There were lots and lots of kangaroos and emus around us here, it’s just that they kept moving away from the two little ones.

Lucy thought this flying fox was great.  This has got to be one of the best we found…there was a free camping site on the one side of it, and on the other was the ocean.

Lucy loves the water.  This was at Palm Valley, an oasis about an hour west of Alice Springs in the central Australian desert.  The day was over 30 degrees celsius, and the kids didn’t care that they had no bathers.

She’s not always happy, though.  This was about four hours in to the walk around the base of Uluru.  She wasn’t the only one who found the walk around Ayer’s Rock to be way too long, but she wasn’t particularly impressed.  I had to carry her for a while after this.
